Construction Begins June 10, 2004 - thanks for your prayers!

Construction is beginning with drainage under the west parking lot.

Keeping the congregation safe during construction is critical during this project. Inside the construction fence is restricted as a hardhat area, so please do not wander unaccompanied into the construction area at any time. Please be especially careful to keep our kids safe from these dangers. Sections of the west parking lot are temporarily torn up to install underground storm water retention prior to replacing the parking surface. Please be careful to stay away from the open ditches during this time and be attentive to all warning barriers and signs.

Second floor buildout is progressing:

Laying the foundation
Sep 24, 2004 11:49am- The concrete slab is being poured and smoothed out as we speak. It promises to be sufficiently set before Ivan finally makes his move. A drenching storm could have set us back for days, even a week. But the cement trucks are rolling in and out like cars at McDonalds, and the work is proceeding at high pace. The building will soon be growing before our eyes.

Mar 18, 2005
As stated at the congregational meeting this past weekend, the construction process is nearing completion! The final phase will entail construction of a Sanctuary porte-cochere (arrival hood) and driveway, which commenced in the past couple days. For the next couple weeks, the front doors of the Sanctuary will have only limited access. Please consider the following temporary access provisions through this phase of construction:

  • Please do not walk through the areas clearly under construction to avoid any chance of injury and minimize dirt tracking into the Sanctuary building.
  • All temporary handicap parking spaces have been relocated to the south El Dorado parking lot with access to the Sanctuary through the side door. The Andrew ministers will be available to assist entry to the building.
  • Members are asked to enter the building using the side doors between the Sanctuary and the Church Life Center buildings; both from the El Dorado (south) parking lot and on the opposite side adjacent to the Mt. Zion room and across from the Parlor as reached from the N and NE parking lots.
  • The sidewalk between the Sanctuary and the new CE Building continues to provide access east and west, but be aware that in times of heavy rain it tends to get muddy. Also this sidewalk will be dug up soon and replaced with an all new sidewalk. We will give further instructions when that happens.

It is critical during steel erection of the porte-cochere construction that no one walks through the area in front of the Sanctuary due to overhead hazards. This area will be clearly marked at these times so that everyone can comply with the warnings and instructions as posted.

Thank you for your cooperation. Be assured that we are working to minimize the duration and amount of inconvenience as we build.

In Christ’s service,
Lynne Kaley, Paul Marshall, and Terry Keeler Your ABC Construction Team

Apr 24, 2005 - Almost done!

May 15, 2005 - Sneak Peak

May 31, 2005 - New Building Named

After considering more than 50 nominated names, Connie Nyquist and her committee recommended to the Session—who voted in the affirmative—that the new building be called the Capernaum Center. In Mark 9, Jesus and the disciples arrive in Capernaum. In verses 36-37 we read, “He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.’’ How fitting for the building where our children will be nurtured in their faith.

SPECIAL GIFTS!

Don’t forget to look through the furniture and landscape needs for the new building and consider making a special gift to shower it with blessings. Already the children’s art room tables have been paid for, the pastor’s office furniture has been given, numerous chairs for children and the fellowship hall, some shrubs and sod, four gathering room tables, and the list is growing. Don’t miss the chance to give something special! Attached is a list for your consideration. You can contact Jeannie in the office for further details or to make a specific commitment for any particular item.

About the Stained Glass Window in Fellowship Hall
The beautiful stained glass in our new Fellowship Hall (created by Pearl Stained Glass) depicts Jesus welcoming the children as described in Mark 9:36-37. It was made possible through the many memorial donations by the CLPC family to the Hunter and Kimberly Culpepper Memorial Fund. This fund, memorializing the grandson and daughter of Pam and Peter Cronk, was established in August 2003 upon Kim's death. The family wanted the glass to be not only about children, but for children, to honor the memory of Hunter, who died six years ago at the age of almost eight.

You will note the glass is hung low enough for children to view and enjoy the many animals and insects depicted for their discovery and delight.

OK, who can spot the armadillo?

November 2005 Update- excerpts from the Congregational Meeting

The final items are being completed and we expect the project to close out within $200,000 of the original estimate. This was an amazing feat considering the steel escallation alone overran the budget by $225,000. Thanks to the hard work of the Building Committee, this was partially offset by $25,000 of savings in other areas of the project. Thanks to the Building Committee and the Finance Committee for a great job and being good stewards of God's resources! Thanks to all who have contributed and are continuing to contribute financially to the Compelled by Grace Campaign. Look for more details next month on the final costs in the closeout report.

After rolling the balance of the Church Life Center mortgage, the Capernaum Center contruction, the 2nd floor Youth wing buildout, and the balance of the Sanctuary rennovation less the contributions to date to the Compelled by Grace building fund, we now have a mortgage of $4,400,000.

We have made the first payment of $34,000 toward the mortgage in October. This is the payment which would result in the payoff in 20 years. Going into this project, session set a target of actually paying the mortgage off in 10 years or less. Therefore, as promised, we will be conducting a "Compelled by Grace-2" capital campaign in the Spring of 2006 with the goal of paying off the mortgage early. When we pay off the mortgage early, this will result in a saving of $2,500,000 interest over 10 years. Imagine the difference CLPC can make in the world with an extra $2,500,000!

Please begin to pray for this capital campaign and your roll in it. Look for more details in 1Q2006!

COMPELLED BY GRACE WRAPPING UP
Our three year Compelled By Grace capital campaign will be wrapping up at the end of May. Nearly $2.1 million was pledged and to date we've received over $1.6 million. For those of you who accelerated your contributions last year and fulfilled your pledge we would like to say thanks! If you have not yet fulfilled your pledge we ask you to please do so by May 31st. We still owe $4.4 million on the new facilities so we will be initiating a new three-year campaign this summer ("Now Finish the Work") with the goal of retiring our debt in ten years or less. If you did not pledge to Compelled By Grace but would like to give, you may do so by simply writing "Compelled By Grace" on the outside of your offering envelope along with the amount you would like to designate. Any and all contributions are significant!
