MISSIONS
SCRIPTURES
By
Juan Guerra
Although
the following scriptures are some of the most obvious in their
missionary intent, the list that follows is by no means
all-inclusive. And it is not that we are trying to show that the Bible
has a missionary intent, but rather that it is a missionary handbook;
and missions is at the core of the gospel message.
In reading these scriptures, the following
information will help you interpret them properly. The Greek word ethne has traditionally been translated as “nations”. A better
translation would have been “ethnic groups” or “peoples”. Basileas is the word for political units or countries but this word
was not used in the Greek. The reference is always to ethne. So, India is a basilea
containing some 1,800 ethne.
Thus, when reading the verses below you could, in your mind, replace
the word “nations” with “ethnic groups” for a more correct
interpretation of God’s word.

12:1-3
The
Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your
father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make

and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be
blessed through you.”

for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has
come from a distant land because of your great name and your mighty
hand and your outstretched arm when he comes and prays toward this

the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may
know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may
know that this house I have built bears your name.

shall be one flock and one shepherd.
John

him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to
call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes
from faith.
Romans
10:14
But
how can they call on one in whom they have not believed? And how can
they believe in one of whom they have not heard? How can they hear
without someone preaching to them, and how can they preach unless they
are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who
bring good news!”(Isaiah 52:7)
Romans
15:8,9
For
I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of
God’s truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs so that
the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy, as it is written:
“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles…”
All
the missionary journeys of the apostles. See as an example Paul’s
description in Romans 15:19-26. In 15:20a Paul writes: “It has
always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not
known”.
Romans
15:20
It
has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not
known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.
Romans
16:25-27
Now
to him who is able to establish you by my gospel… so that all
nations might believe and obey him – to the only wise God be glory
forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

that
God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting
men’s sins against them…
Galatians
3:6-9
Consider
Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to him as
righteousness.” Understand, then, that those who believe are
children of Abraham. The Scripture foresaw that God would
justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the Gospel in advance to
Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those
who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
Galatians
3:14
He
redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to
the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive
the promise of the Spirit.
Ephesians
6:19
Pray
also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so
that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel..
Philippians
2:9-11
Therefore
God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is
above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in
heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Colossians
1:6
..
All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as
it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood
God’s grace in all its truth.
1
Thessalonians 1:7,8
And
so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.
The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and
Achaia – your faith in God has become known everywhere…
1
Timothy 3:16
Beyond
all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a
body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached
among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in
glory.
Titus
2:11
For
the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.

And
we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the
Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of
God, God lives in him and he in God.
Revelation
5:9-10
Your
are worthy …because you were slain, and with your blood you
purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and
nation …and they will reign on the earth.
Revelation
7:9
After
this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one
could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing
before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white
robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.
Romans
10:13-15
..”Everyone
who calls in the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Joel 2:32, Acts
2:21) How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?
And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And
how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they
preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are
the feet of those who bring good news!” (Isaiah 52:7)
